I used to enjoy taking my classes on Field Trips.  Not only did I take them to historical sites and museums but to offices, libraries, courts and even the theatre as well as work sites. 

Have your students help plan the trip. My students used street & subway maps to plan the routes for our field trips. 

I also prepared a Scavenger Hunt sheet for the trips.
