Twitter Lingo and Tweeting Tips

On this page I highlight the most common used Twitter vocabulary.

@ = username

Avatar = your Twitter picture

Bio = Your biography in 160 characters

DM = Direct Message To send a private message you and person must be following each other. You can no longer send links in these messages.

Favorite = You can favorite a tweet (like bookmarking a tweet) by clicking the "star" next to the tweet in your feed.

FF = #FF Follow Friday is a chance to promote some of your favorite follows.

Follow = You can choose to follow someone whose tweets & information you enjoy reading.

Handle or Username = Your username in 16 characters.

Hashtag = The # symbol which categorizes topics and directs tweets into one stream.

HT = Hat tip attributes a link to a Twitter user

Lists = Groups of Twitter users.

Mention = Using the @ to mention a Twitter user in your tweet.

MT = Modified Tweet You can modify a RT and add or change some wording.

Profile = This page provides information about a Twitter user as well as that person's tweets.
PRT = Please retweet
Reply = You can reply to a person's message by clicking the arrow button
RT = Retweet which is a way to forward a person. Some use "via" as well
Spam = Unwanted messages
Timeline = List of your tweets.
Tweet = Your 280 character message.
Some abbreviations:
Ts=teachers Ps=parents admin = administrators
Learn how to use abbreviations, like b/c for because, w/o
think of symbols & numbers as part of words: cre8, b4, in2, F2F etc. Really helps! gr8
If you need more than 140 characters, just add "1 of 2" to the end of your tweet and then "2 of 2" when you start the 2nd.
